Amey's Blog

I planned for this to be about homemaking and homeschooling, but now it's just a chaotic jumble of news and ideas about animals, kids, food, and other random thoughts.

They're Still Blind...

Here's yet another example illustrating the decay of the moral fabric in our society: using fetal tissue to restore lost sight. It is so sad that there are people who have become so accepting of the loss of innocent life. All they see are blind people who have had their sight restored. They don't realize the importance of the tragic loss of life necessary to bring about these scientific "achievements".

Election Musings

I've been considering over the last few months the merits of third-party candidates for president (namely, Michael Peroutka of the Constitution Party) vs. our old standby, George W. My quandary was, should we vote for the candidate who most fully embraces our ideals regardless of "electability", or should we vote for the candidate most likely to win in order to keep out of office the one candidate that we DO NOT WANT as president? I have read good articles on each side.

I especially appreciate the insights of the "Queen of Carrots", whose blog I just finished reading. She refers to the analogy of driving off of a cliff: the Democrats are driving off the cliff at 85 mph, the Republicans at 55 mph, and the Constitution Party has erected a concrete wall between the car and the cliff. That does seem to be an accurate picture to me. Tough choice, isn't it?

It's a little troubling to me, though, that so many Christians do not seem to be addressing this issue. They just seem to assume that a vote for Bush is a vote for Jesus. Do they just not know about the Constitution Party? Is it a matter of dismissing this option for a very good reason which I haven't thought of or heard about yet? Maybe they agree with everything the President has done over the last four years.

Riots Next Wednesday?

Is it just me, or have Elizabeth Edwards and Theresa Heinz-Kerry been spending too much time together? I read this morning that Mrs. Edwards was asked if there might be riots after the vote, and the senator's wife said: "Uh ... well ... not if we win." What's up with that? Is that a thinly veiled threat? So what if they lose? It sounds like something Kerry's wife would say. There are other signs that a Bush win could mean violence, and I agree with Joseph Farah - the possibility isn't that far-fetched.

Only 8 Shopping Days Left!

There are only 8 shopping days left before Election Day! It looks like a close election again this year, so get ready for things to d r a g o u t for another month (at least) after the elections are officially over. We'll see how many "disenfranchised" voters there are (if they are disenfranchised, how do we know how many there are? and how do we know they exist in the first place?), how many lawyers each of the main parties can afford to hire, and how many times we need to handle the punch-card ballots for recounts. Besides that, I understand that there are huge problems with the computerized voting machines being subject to tampering. Sounds like a recipe for civil war to me. Last election the democrats thought the election was stolen. What lengths will they go to this time to make sure it doesn't happen again? A lot of people are saying they can't wait until this election is over. I agree! I just don't know for sure when that will be...

This Cracks Me Up!

The news story in which a British newspaper convinces thousands of Brits to write to citizens in Clark County, Ohio, cracks me up. These people wrote to swing voters to encourage them to vote John Kerry for president, but their letters actually infuriated the people who received them and now these people are volunteering at the Bush campaign headquarters in Clark County. The British paper's editor called the venture a success, but then explained that the effort was being cancelled.

Cold Medicine

Could someone please explain to me why we must limit the amount of cold medicine one can buy? Some states are beginning to limit how much pseudoephedrine (brand name, Sudafed) a single person can purchase. This happened to me at Wal-Mart last winter. I had 3 "ducklings" 4 years old and younger, and they all had colds. I was not able to buy enough cold medicine for them. The clerk told me only 2 (I think?) packages at a time. The rationale behind this is so that people will not use the Sudafed to make methamphetamines. What are larger families than mine supposed to do? Fortunately my grandmother was in line behind me and she bought them for us. It's not as if Sudafed is some kind of fringe, over-the-top, rarely used cold medicine. It is THE MAJOR decongestant. Decongestant is all you need when your main symptom is a stuffy nose (other than maybe some chicken noodle soup, hot tea, and plenty of tissues). I can certainly understand that we want to discourage drug use, and babies born with these drugs in their systems are heart-wrenching to hear about. However, this rule seems to diminish the need for personal accountability when it comes to drug use. Do women who use methamphetamines know that it will harm their babies? YES! They know! They do it anyway. The main effect of this rule is that people like me (mothers of young children and/or large families) can't get Sudafed when they need it.

My Husband

Can I just say that I have the greatest husband in the world? He has a stunning intellect, rugged good looks, and knows superb cooking when he tastes it. What else could I ask for? :-)

Finally!

I tried several times yesterday to write something on this blog, but apparently I had the wrong settings. Now that I have it figured out, it's time to get off the computer and start school with Duckling #1. Maybe I can post something a little more profound later today...

This is a test post. God is good.
