Now that we are farm people, we are interested in making sure that the National Animal Identification System (NAIS) does not come to our state. This is the dumbest thing I've heard of in a long time (since Cindy Sheehan, maybe). Did you know that in the state of Texas right now, if you have a baby chick but don't register your property as a farm with the government, and you don't tag your chick with some id number, you will be
fined $1,000 per day? This is all under the guise of "protecting" our country from the bird flu. The government is so concerned about protecting us from the bird flu, that they are also now going to
import chickens from China. Is it just me, or does this make absolutely NO SENSE? All this NAIS thing will do is make things difficult if not impossible for all of us "grow-your-own-food, live-off-the-land" types.
