Amey's Blog

I planned for this to be about homemaking and homeschooling, but now it's just a chaotic jumble of news and ideas about animals, kids, food, and other random thoughts.

Fowl!

Our 22 chicks are about 1-1/2 weeks old now, and they are all healthy and growing fast! We will have to separate the ducks and turkeys pretty soon. They are fun to watch, and since we've never had the turkeys or guineas before, we're interested to see how they change as they grow.

We found a bird on the edge of our pond last night. It was rather, how shall I say...lifeless. We had never seen one of these before, so we came inside to look it up. It wasn't difficult to find out what it was, what with the peculiar white beak and strange-looking blue legs. It was an American Coot, apparently migrating through our area (according to the maps we found on the internet).

Maybe these are more common than I think. I'm somewhat new to paying attention to the birds around here. Here's a picture we found:

We thought it was a duck at first, but as you can see - no webbed feet.
